IAB Level 1 - Award in Computerised Accounting

Learners who complete the qualification successfully will have basic knowledge and understanding that will provide an understanding of the importance of maintaining accuracy, security and data integrity in performing bookkeeping tasks using accounting software and give them an understanding of the capabilities of the software and how it can enable better financial management and control of a business.

Successful completion of the qualification will give learners the skills required to carry out a range of basic day-to-day computerised accounting routines and activities using Sage software, including the setting up of the system, the entry of business transactions, and other routine basic bookkeeping tasks and introduce them to financial record keeping using a commercial Sage computerised accounting package.

On completing the qualification, learners will have progressed to gaining a Sage competence certificate at this level as well as enabling progression into self-employment or employment by preparing them for various job roles which may include, but not limited to, junior bookkeeper, accounts clerk, finance assistant, data entry clerk, invoicing clerk, sales ledger clerk, accounts trainee.

What it covers?

The Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting for Business qualification comprises three mandatory units:

  • Introduction to computerised accounting – D/508/5836
  • Financial services and payment methods – A/508/5861
  • Set-up a computerised accounting system and process data – Y/508/5849

On registration with the IAB and the payment of their course fees, learners are given access to a version of Sage 50 Accounts Professional, which is time limited for them to use during their course of study. Supplementary study materials are also provided.

Who is it suitable for?

The Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting qualification is specifically aimed at learners who wish to begin their studies of computerised accounting and gain entry to a Level 1 qualification within the regulated qualification framework.

The Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounting qualification has been designed to appeal to learners:

  • Learners starting their studies in the subject of bookkeeping and accounting from a point of no previous knowledge or experience.
  • In employment and with some limited basic accounting knowledge and skills who want to formalise their competence by gaining a recognised accredited qualification in computerised accounting

  • and owners of small businesses wanting an introduction to bookkeeping and accounting so that they can personally keep computerised records for their business and make full use of the functions that a computerised accounting package offers.

How long it takes?

The qualification usually takes between 3-6 months to complete, but this will depend on study method and course timetable. Most students can potentially complete this qualification a little quicker within 2–3 months, they aim to fast-track on their study method and course timetable.

How and where to study?

You can choose to study through online distance learning, blended learning, or in the classroom—whatever suits you best. Whether you prefer evening classes, part-time, or full-time study, there’s an option to fit your schedule. Even if you opt for distance learning, you'll need to find a training provider. We’ll assist you every step of the way, including with registration. Once a cohort of students is registered, we’ll schedule sessions at times that work best for the group.

This qualification is made up of:

This qualification consists of two knowledge tests and one assignment. The knowledge tests and assignments are delivered online. Pilot assessments are provided for the purposes of practice and revision. Pilot assessments are not timed and can be undertaken as many times as the learner chooses. Once the pilot assessment is passed, the learner can attempt the live assessment. Live assessments are timed.

Please be aware that, once provided with your log-in for Sage Business Cloud, Sage will only allow you to access the portal for 180 days. If you have not completed your Sage element of your qualification in this time, you will need to contact us to arrange for an extension. Please note that there will be a fee for this, payable to Sage Qualifications plus a small admin fee.

What is the cost?

The total cost for the course is £500 plus the registration, assessment, admin and certification fees. The total cost can be determined at the point of enrolment.

  • A course fee of £500, which covers tuition (if attending in-person classes) and is paid directly to us.
  • Registration onto the qualification
  • All IAB assessment fees (excluding re-sits)
  • Certification upon successful completion of all assessments.

The registration fee, paid directly to IAB, grants access to study support resources. The assessment fee is paid to your training provider or assessment venue. Please be aware that training providers and assessment venues may charge an additional administrative fee for the assessment, which can vary between organisations.

Entry requirements

Students can start with any qualification based on their existing skills and experience. For the best chance of success, we recommend that students have a strong foundation in English and maths before beginning their studies.
